The Billy Clagett Scholarship was created in 2013 by Laura and Rex Bohls as a means to provide tournament opportunities for youth in the First Tee — Greater Austin program. Specifically, the Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour, Little Linksters, Junior Links and Prestige summer tournament series.

Scholarship recipients must be a member of “Team First Tee,” which is a program within First Tee — Greater Austin for students who are; Birdie Level or higher, maintain A/B Honor Roll, participate in a First Tee Class and volunteer for a minimum of three hours a month with the chapter.

The program has grown significantly since its inception starting with 13 youth in 2013 to 45 youth in 2016, with the chapter growing we want this trend to continue. In 2016 we were very grateful to have the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation also make a significant contribution to the scholarship fund thus allowing us to both increase the number of students in the program and also increase the amount of funding for each student.

Playing tournament golf is the ultimate test to ensure the students in the First Tee program truly grasp The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum; goal setting, self-management, healthy habits, dealing with adversity, conflict resolution, and interpersonal communications, all of which are a part of preparing yourself and playing tournament golf. Not to mention that playing tournament golf is A LOT of fun for the kids; making new friends, playing different golf courses and traveling around Central Texas.

Please help us grow the opportunities for the students by making a contribution, it costs approximately $250 to “Keep a Kid on Course” this coming summer (membership fee and five tournaments).

Billy Clagett has been a dominant force in Central Texas amateur golf for the last 40 years. He is most known for his dominance in the historic Firecracker Open at “Muny.” The Firecracker Open played at Lions Municipal Golf Course is the premier men’s amateur championship in Central Texas, Billy won the event a record 6 times in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, and 2001 and has the 10th hole at “Muni” named after him. Billy was also the Men’s City Amateur Champion in 1994 and his stellar play was not just in area events, Billy was also the medalist at the 2002 and 2005 USGA Senior Amateur.

Billy is a great friend of First Tee — Greater Austin and it is not unusual for folks to spot Billy at Harvey Penick Golf Campus playing with some of the participants in the program. The chapter is very fortunate to have Billy involved and grateful for the support of the Bohls, The Spieth Family Foundation and folks like yourself that give the youth in our program an opportunity to continue to grow their skills.
